You Can’t Make This Stuff Up

October 21, 2009

Heard the one about a Kenyan and another Kenyan who run into a train? True story. Last Sunday, at the Des Moines Marathon, Simon Sawe was in the lead when 400 meters before the finish line he came upon a railroad crossing. That’s right, a real railroad crossing, with a choo-choo train and flashing lights — the whole shabang. So he stopped. And waited. Second-place David Tuwei caught up with him and they waited together. When it was time to go, they sprinted to the finish line. Sawe won the race in 2:24:50. Tuwei finished five seconds behind him in 2:24:55. But who’s counting… You think you can, you think you can, you think you can… Oh wait…

My favorite comments about this story in USA TODAY:

  • runlikeamother wrote: “Maybe he should’ve “trained” better…”
  • ComSense wrote: “…I wonder what the two runners talked about as they were waiting…”
  • 24×7 wrote: “Proof that trains are faster than Kenyans.”
